The National Weather Service confirmed on Monday that two tornadoes touched down on Sunday in west Jacksonville. The Peacock Ridge neighborhood saw an EF-1 tornado, with winds up to 100 mph and it was on the ground just over a mile. An EF-0, with winds up to 85 mph, touched down near Normandy Boulevard for about a mile.
The strong severe weather system moved through Northeast Florida on Sunday afternoon. Tornado warnings kept being extended as the storms developed and moved through.
The Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department said dozens of homes were damaged by a suspected tornado around 6300 Peacock Ridge Road, not far from Cecil Airport. Trees and fences were damaged by a second touchdown near Normandy Blvd.
Scott Cordero, the meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service Jacksonville, assessed the damage.
“It’s very indicative of a long and delineated path and we are assessing the stretch of a potential tornado and potentially winds between about 80 and 100 miles per hour,” he said.
The severe weather brought with it hail and high winds. You can see some of the images of Sunday’s storm from our viewers and from our Insiders using SnapJAX.
Several viewers also snapped photos of a brightly colored double rainbow during the severe weather.
