Pollen Forecast, New Look, Same Information

Local Pollen Counts

. (.)

You may have noticed that the numbers have changed on our Pollen Forecast. The information is the same, only the digits are different.

We are fortunate, especially this time of year, to have a local pollen count. This information comes from certified counting stations, who volunteer their time and effort to provide the highest quality of information. Most states have one or more pollen counters that report their findings to the NAB.

The counting station is located at Edward Waters University and the Station Head is Brian Seymour, PhD (brian.seymour@ewc.edu). You can view the website here: https://pollen.aaaai.org/#/station/7a2c0906-98c6-45c0-8c57-b221f71c95ed

Reading the Levels:

The pollen and mold spore levels were developed using the chart below. The concentrations in the chart were statistics from all certified counting sites. The concentrations were translated into levels based on the following:

  • Low levels are concentrations that are less than the median or 50th percentile (i.e. half the counts were below the median.)
  • Moderate levels are concentrations that fall between the 50th and 75th percentile
  • High levels fall between the 75th and 99th percentile
  • Very high levels are above the 99th percentile (99% of the counts are below this level)

Numerically the ranges would look like this:

Count 1-14 LOW

Count 15-89 MODERATE

Count 90-1,499 HIGH

Count 1,500 or higher VERY HIGH.

To make it easier we will be using the wording Low to Very High.
