JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – When Jennifer Otero’s mother, Lorraine, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2005, they quickly realized resources were limited when it came to support and education.
WATCH | 11th Annual First Coast Parkinson’s Run preview
Fast forward to January 2014 to the Inaugural First Coast Parkinson’s Run, Lorraine was pushed around the course in a wheelchair by her family, by now, she had limited speech and no mobility.
During the event, she cried from the joy and inclusion she felt surrounded by through the other Parkinson’s participants and families. Sadly, before she could see the success and awareness the run brought to her community, Lorraine passed away in December 2014.
Ten years later, resources are better for people with Parkinson’s Disease, and the 11th Annual First Coast Parkinson’s Run is a perfect place to meet others with PD and community members passionate about helping out.
Over 800 runners, walkers, and vendors are expected to be at Riverside Park on Saturday, April 13 beginning at 7:30 a.m.
The event is more than just a run — it’s a commitment to helping to improve the quality of life of those diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Most people suffering from Parkinson’s are lonely and depressed, according to the Parkinson Foundation, which is why this event is more important than ever.
The weather forecast for Saturday couldn’t be better for this event, lows in the mid-50s early, then moving into the mid-60s by the time awards are handed out!
Be sure to swing by Riverside Park on Saturday between 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to enjoy the outdoors and see a community coming together to Run. Fight. Cure Parkinson’s Disease.
