A new disturbance is making waves in the Atlantic

The tropics wake up after a sleepy July

8:00 AM 07/28/2024 NHC Tropical Weather Outlook (WJXT)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is following an area of disturbed weather over the central tropical Atlantic Ocean that will likely interact with an approaching tropical wave over the next few days. At this time, any cyclone development isn’t expected over the next 48 hours; in the next seven days, there’s a 40% chance.

From the NHC: Environmental conditions are forecast to become conducive for some development in a day or two, and a tropical depression could form around midweek while the system is near or over the northern Leeward Islands, Greater Antilles, or southwestern Atlantic Ocean.

As the tropics start to wake up after a quiet July, the National Weather Service is offering free virtual classes that will help you better understand the systems and be better prepared.

NWS Training

As we approach August, historically when the tropics start to get active, it’s a good time to make sure your hurricane preparations are in good order. The next named Atlantic cyclone will be Debby.
