Look up at the sky Sunday night to experience the Perseid Meteor shower

Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia skies will clear after midnight for optimal viewing

Perseid Meteor Outlook

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Friday night I saw what I thought was a shooting star. But, now I know it was a Perseid Meteor!

Sunday night, Aug. 11 through the morning of Aug. 12 is when the peak of the summer showers are happening with a good possibility of seeing one or more. Which, apparently, happened to me while walking my dog around 10 p.m. Friday evening.

According to NASA’s website, “While most of these nights only showcase a few meteors each hour, the peak of the Perseids brings many, many more. How much more? The number actually varies every year; there can be as little as a few dozen per hour, but some rare years bring a brief “burst’ of up to two hundred beautiful “shooting stars” an hour.”

If you see a Perseid “shooting star” Meteor, send us your photos by becoming an Insider (if you aren’t already!). We can show off your SnapJax photos both online and on-air.
