Why is there a Flood Watch when it’s not raining?

An accumulation of rainfall can activate a watch as more rain could occur

When you think of flooding it often correlates with rainfall. However, a flood watch can be activated even after the rain stops depending on the accumulation and potential future rainfall.

As of Saturday, the total five days for rain accumulation in parts of Southeast Georgia and Northeast Florida ranged from 3 to 7 inches of rain. There was a high concentration of rain in Glynn and Camden counties in Georgia. The same was happening in Nassau and Duval counties for days.

Below are the rain totals for the past five days as of August 24th.

Flooding has been monitored closely because of the consistency of heavy downpours during the third full week of August.

Camden, Glynn, Nassau, and Duval counties have been near “action” level for some of the flood gauges. However, due to the minimal amount over the weekend, it has allowed enough time for water to recede.

Monday, August 26th, the four counties remain under a flood watch until 8 p.m.

Most areas will likely see between a tenth to a quarter of an inch of rain.

LOOKING AHEAD:

Temperatures will remain mild in the low 70s Monday evening with partly cloudy skies and light winds from the north and northeast before shifting east. Any storms will continue shortly after sunset along and west of 301 and west. Columbia and Alachua will have evening storms with moderate to heavy downpours at times along the I-10 and I-75 corridor.

Fog is possible in the early morning hours leading up to Tuesday morning.

Rain chances return in the late morning and early afternoon for Tuesday beginning on the coast and moving west. Isolated to scattered storms are possible. Temperatures will peak into the upper 80s and low 90s but it will feel like the upper 90s and low 100s by mid afternoon. Most counties will enjoy another day of sunshine. Winds will become breezy Tuesday afternoon during the same time that temperatures peak and storms begin.
