Watching the waves as the quiet tropics wake up just in time for Labor Day

NHC said development is possible this weekend into early next week

The tropics are starting to make waves as we near the end of a quiet August. Hurricane Ernesto was the only storm this month causing ripples across the predictions that this season might not be as active as originally thought.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The tropics are starting to make waves as we near the end of a quiet August.

Hurricane Ernesto was the only storm this month causing ripples across the predictions that this season might not be as active as originally thought.

However, we’re seeing an uptick in the wave activity off the African coast as a new disturbance is closely monitored by the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

As of the 2 p.m. outlook from the NHC, the central tropical Atlantic disturbance is disorganized but moving WNW at 10-15 mph.

NHC believes development is possible this weekend into early next week. There’s a 20% chance of formation through the next seven days.

The Weather Authority is monitoring this system closely and will continue to update it throughout the next several days. Meanwhile, download the Hurricane app for the latest activity updates.
