Multiple tropical systems are churning in the Atlantic, but a new system closer to Florida may be more concerning

The busiest month of tropical activity is living up to the hype

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – All eyes are on the Eastern Atlantic as multiple areas are churning, but a system closer to home may be more concerning.

As of Thursday morning, a non-tropical area of low pressure is looking to form off our coast. According to the National Hurricane Center, once (if) the low-pressure forms, the possibility of tropical formation has a 30% chance in the next 7 days.

Spots to watch

Two additional areas of concern (AL92 & AL94) are in the central Atlantic where a weak area of low pressure several hundred miles from the Leeward Island is starting to look more conducive to development. There’s a 20% chance of the next 2-7 days for tropical formation (for AL94).

TD 7

Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Seven is expected to become the next named Tropical Storm - Gordon - by late Thursday, making this the seventh named storm in 2024. This storm is just off the coast of Africa and is no threat to any land masses, for now.

Spag Models of Atlantic

If it seems like we’ve had a quiet start to the 2024 hurricane season, in comparison, in September 2023 there were seven named storms, and the 2023 season ended officially with 20 named storms, becoming the fourth-most active season on record.
