Drier air, King Tides, and tracking tropics to start the last week of summer

Monday Morning Forecast

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It’s the last week of summer and if you’re expecting the heat and sunshine to return, you may have to wait until Tuesday to have clearer skies. Fall begins on Sunday, September 22 at 8:44 a.m.

Monday begins mostly cloudy with windy and gusty conditions, some fog is possible. Rain will be scattered, mostly in the morning. On Tuesday, we’ll see more sunshine with few showers in the afternoon. Highs will stay in the mid-80s for most of the week.

A King Tide, defined by NOAA as a non-scientific term people use to describe exceptionally high tides, usually occurring during a new or full moon, will elevate tides along the coast Sunday evening into Monday which will increase the chances of flooding along the St. Johns River during high tide. During a King Tide event, when the ground is normally dry, tidal levels are capable of rising 1-2 feet. Timing isn’t optimal after the near foot of rain we’ve received at Jacksonville International Airport and even higher amounts in other parts of our region. Thankfully, our rain chances decrease this week, which will help with the drainage.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight is churning off the coast of South Carolina with tropical storm winds with possible formation. A clear center has not been seen, but is expected to become Tropical Storm Helene within 24 hours before landfall bringing torrential downpours and heavy winds to the Carolinas bas early as Sunday evening through Tuesday.
