Tracking the Tropics: Our area could feel effects of potential tropical system in Gulf later this week

. (.)

A broad area of low pressure is sitting in the Gulf over warm water with low shear and is expected to turn into a hurricane and affect Florida later this week.

Both of these factors provide a highly favorable environment for this storm to form into Hurricane Helene.

As of now, the timeline would be Wednesday to Friday for impacts to be felt.

If those potential impacts come our way, they would likely include winds, rain, coastal flooding, and dangerous rip currents.

According to the National Hurricane Center, local impacts are becoming more likely for Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.

A tropical depression or storm is likely to form within the next day or two as the system moves northward across the northwestern Caribbean Sea and into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, where additional development is expected, according to the National Hurricane Center.
