County-by-county school closures ahead of Hurricane Helene

The system in the Gulf strengthened into Hurricane Helene at 11 a.m. Wednesday as it moves north through the Gulf of Mexico.

The current track has it making landfall along Florida’s Panhandle, likely sometime Thursday.

If your school will be closing for the storm, email webteam@wjxt.com to be added to this list.

Duval County

Duval County Public Schools has canceled classes on Thursday and Friday for Hurricane Helene.

The district already had an early release day scheduled for Wednesday. Extended-day programs will remain open for normal hours on Wednesday; however, parents and guardians are encouraged to pick up their children early to prepare for the storm.

All afterschool activities and athletics scheduled for Wednesday afternoon through Friday, Sept. 27 are canceled, including Friday night football games. Students cannot play in a game if school is not in session that day.

List of private school closures:

  • Lighthouse Christian School Northside will be closed on Thursday and Friday.
  • Episcopal’s three campuses will be closed on Thursday.
  • Faith Christian Academy of Nassau County will be closed on Thursday and Friday and will resume on Monday.
  • The Bolles School will be closed on Sept. 26. Due to campus power outages, all Bolles campuses will be closed today (September 27).
  • Thank you for keeping the community informed throughout the storm. Stay safe!
  • Jacksonville Country Day will be closed Sept. 26 and will reopen Sept. 27.
  • St. Johns Country Day will be closed Sept. 26 and Sept. 27.
  • Hope Christian Academy will be closed Sept. 26 and Sept. 27, including K5-12 Academy and Early Education.
  • Trinity Christian Academy will be closed Sept. 26 and Sept. 27.
  • Jericho School for Children with Autism will be closed Friday.

Clay County

Clay County District Schools will remain open on Wednesday, but all schools and district offices will close on Thursday and Friday due to the potential storm impact from Helene.

In preparation for potential impacts, shelters will open on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at the following schools: Orange Park High, Clay High, Wilkinson Elementary, Lake Asbury Junior High, and Keystone Heights Elementary.

St. Johns County

All SJCSD schools and offices will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 26 and Friday, Sept 27. All extracurricular activities and athletic events will take place as scheduled on Friday into the weekend.

Columbia County

Columbia County Schools will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 26, and Friday, Sept. 27.

Classes will resume on Monday, September 30.

Nassau County

All Nassau District Schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday. No after-school activities or events will happen on Wednesday.

Bradford County

All Bradford County Schools will be closed Thursday and Friday.

Union County

The Union County School District , including the Tigers Den will be closed on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27. Normal operations will resume Sept. 30. Friday night’s football game will be rescheduled.

Baker County

All Baker County schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday. Classes will resume on Monday, Sept. 30.

Putnam County

The Putnam County School District will be closed on Thursday and all after-school activities are canceled. Extracurricular activities for today, Wednesday, September 25th, will continue as normal.

Ware County

All Ware County schools and the Central Office will be closed to students and staff on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 26 and 27, 2024. Classes will resume Sept. 30.

Brantley County

All Brantley Schools and the Central Office will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 26th and Friday, Sept. 27th.

Camden County

Camden County Schools will close all schools Thursday, Sept. 26, and Friday, Sept. 27.

Charlton County

Charlton County schools will be closed Sept. 26 and 27. Classes will resume Sept. 30.

Glynn County

Glynn County schools will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 26 and class will resume on Friday, Sept. 27.

Pierce County

Pierce County Schools will be closed for students and staff tomorrow and Friday. All school activities including sports will be cancelled for Thursday afternoon. A decision will be made on Friday morning about Friday’s football game.

If weather does not permit the away game against Vidalia to be played on Friday, it will be changed to Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Classes will resume on Monday, September 30th.

Bacon County

Bacon County Schools will close Sept. 26 and Sept. 27. Classes will resume Sept. 30.

Colleges

St. Johns River State College (SJR State) will cancel all online classes and on-campus classes at its three locations - Orange Park, Palatka, St. Augustine - on Thursday and Friday. All office locations will also be closed. Athletic events and Thrasher-Horne Center shows will continue as scheduled Friday. Classes, labs and clinicals will continue as previously scheduled Saturday.

All classes and activities at all FSCJ campuses and centers will be canceled from Thursday through Friday. This includes online classes. Additionally, all administrative offices will be closed during this time. At this point, they plan to fully reopen on Saturday and resume all normal operations.

University of Florida offices will close and classes will be canceled beginning at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26 and will remain closed through Friday, Sept. 27. All academic and student-related activities, including online classes and exams, will also be canceled during that time.

University of North Florida is canceling all classes, including online classes, Thursday, Sept. 26, and Friday, Sept. 27. University offices will be closed during this time. Activities and events scheduled on campus are also canceled. The University plans to resume normal operations on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Jacksonville University is remote Thursday, Sept. 25 and Friday, Sept. 26.

Edward Waters University classes are canceled Thursday and Friday.
