The system in the Gulf became Tropical Storm Helene at 11 a.m. Tuesday and is expected to rapidly intensify as it moves north through the Gulf of Mexico.
The current track has it becoming a major hurricane before making landfall along Florida’s Panhandle, likely sometime Thursday.

Duval County
Duval County Public Schools has canceled classes Thursday and Friday for Hurricane Helene.
The district already had an early release day scheduled for Wednesday. Extended-day programs will remain open for normal hours on Wednesday; however, parents and guardians are encouraged to pick up their children early to prepare for the storm.
All afterschool activities and athletics scheduled for Wednesday afternoon through Friday, Sept. 27 are canceled, including Friday night football games. Students cannot play in a game if school is not in session that day.
