JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It’s true, over the past few months your rain gauges worked overtime and your lawn (and brain) were saturated.
Now we know for the time period of July, August, and September 2024 will go down in the history books as the wettest on record for Jacksonville.
“September finished with 13.53 inches of rainfall at the JAX Int’l Airport (+5.97 inches above normal) and is the 3rd consecutive month with rainfall amounts above 10 inches, which is ONLY time this has occurred since records began in 1871,” said National Weather Service Jacksonville Meteorologist Jason Hess. “The July/August/September rainfall total of 36.90 inches (+15.69 inches above normal) ranks as the highest total on record at Jacksonville during this 3 month time frame, breaking the previous record by almost 2 inches.”
Annual rainfall for Jacksonville is 53.40 inches. Since Jan. 1, 2024, JAX has recorded 58.44 inches compared to 44.82 as of Oct. 2. Do the math and we’re almost 14 inches above average and the year isn’t over yet, and neither is hurricane season, which ends on Nov. 30.
Normal rainfall for July is 6.77 inches, August is 6.88 inches and typically the rainiest month, September is 7.56 inches. As October begins, we’ve recorded a trace of rain. Normal rainfall totals for October are 4.03 inches.
