High winds and chilly temperatures bring fire danger to North Central Florida

Friday Fire Dangers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Not only are we feeling the chill on Friday, but the dry air and breezy conditions could lead to wildfires.

The National Weather Service Jacksonville has issued an elevated fire danger notice for our region due to northwesterly winds becoming gusty by the mid-morning hours Friday and will persist through late afternoon, with these gusty winds combining with a very dry air mass to create an elevated fire danger this afternoon as humidity values plummet, especially across North Central Florida.

A northwesterly breeze will continue overnight, with clear skies and a cold air mass allowing lows to fall to the mid and upper 30s at most inland locations, where patchy frost will be possible towards sunrise on Saturday.

Winds will then diminish by Saturday evening, setting up radiational cooling and a better chance for frost formation at inland locations by the early morning hours on Sunday.
