Irma loss estimates continue climbing

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Estimated insured losses from Hurricane Irma have reached $6.3 billion as the number of claims has topped 850,000, according to information released Monday by the state Office of Insurance Regulation.

The latest report showed that 853,356 claims have been filed with insurance companies in the state, with 710,152 involving residential properties.

Miami-Dade County had the largest number of claims filed, 111,189, while Broward County had 70,710, Orange County had 67,670, Lee County had 64,033 and Collier County had 61,343.

Since Irma made landfall Sept. 10 in Monroe and Collier counties, 45 percent of the claims have been closed with some payment. Another 29 percent were closed without any payments.
