NAS Jax reopens' Mayport Naval Station to reopen at 4 p.m.

Bases were closed to non-essential personnel on Friday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – NAS Jacksonville reopened for business Sunday morning and Naval Station Mayport will resume normal base operations at 4 p.m. Sunday, the Navy announced.

The Navy said NAS Jax suffered only minor damage and no injuries to base personnel or family members.

The main exchange at Mayport is already open, and the commissary will reopen at 9 a.m. Tuesday. At noon Sunday, an Emergency Family Assistance Center will open at the base chapel with housing, legal, school and relief personnel to assist families with their needs.

Cleanup continues around the base and personnel should remain clear of fallen trees and stay clear of safety barriers.

The powerful Category 2 storm brushed the Northeast Florida coastline Friday afternoon and evening, leaving a trail of downed trees, downed power lines and flooding across the Jacksonville area.

The first responders and emergency personnel were the only people that should be moving throughout the base, officials said.

Naval Station Mayport officials announced that at 6 p.m. Saturday the base's access was expanded to include housing residents and mission essential personnel required to assist in recovery operations.

Officials reported no major damage to infrastructure at Mayport and that the ships in the basin fared well. Lots of debris and downed trees and some power outages were reported. Initial flooding subsided quickly.

"We prepare for this kind of thing and had a great team in place to handle the aftermath," Bill Austin, public affairs officer for Naval Station Mayport.
